4. Nz. József BERECZ20 was born on 9 March 1823 in Szepezd, Zala m, HUN.21 At the time of his birth, his father was identified as Érd. János Beretz, the Evangelical school teacher in Szepezd. [Notes: Szepezd is now known as Balatonszepezd. The abbreviation "Érd" stands for Érdemes -- meaning "worthy or excellent" -- the title given to teachers at that time.] He was baptized on March 17 with five pairs of godparents, including a judge, an Evangelical pastor, a Reformed teacher, a tavern owner, and a landowner. He died on 9 March 1894 at the age of 71 in Kissomlyó, Vas m, HUN.22 He died at age 71. Cause of death was listed as "bladder trouble." He was buried at the Kissomlyó cemetery on March 11 by the pastor, Károly Nagy. József began his career in 1842 as the evangelical teacher in Nemeskocs, Vas megye. This was a daughter-chapel of the Lutheran church in Boba, which was from 1832-75 under Pastor Sándor Kiss. He then taught from 1846 or 1847 until his retirement in 1880 at Alsóság. That school was originally built in 1791, was expanded in 1862 under his direction, and by 1880 had 206 students: 195 from Alsóság and 11 from Izsákfa. From 1869 he had a student teacher to assist him. Ns. Etelka SZALAY and Nz. József BERECZ were married on 7 February 1848 in Szilsárkany, Sopron m. HUN.23 They were married by Samuel Kis, the evangelical pastor in Szilsárkany. Witnesses were Sándor Kis, the evangelical pastor in Boba, Vas m. and Ns. Mihály Szabó of Izsákfa, Vas m. The bride as given away (kiadó) by Ns. Zsigmond Kovács of Szilsárkany, the husband of her aunt Terézia. It was noted that the álispán (LtGov) of the county provided a dispensation for the bride to marry outside the area.

5. Ns. Etelka SZALAY was born on 2 September 1824 in Szilsárkany, Sopron m. HUN.24 She was baptized on the day of her birth by Samuel Mátisz, evangelical pastor of Vadosfa. There were also several other godparents from Felsó Pasztori, Vadosfa, and Kissömlyó. Note on the name "Etelka" -- it is not a Hungarian diminutive of Ethel, rather it is an old Hungarian name popularized as the name of the daughter of the Magyar chief, Árpád. She died on 14 November 1876 at the age of 52 in Alsóság, Vas m, HUN.25 She died at age 52 of edema -- probably congestive heart failure. She is identified as the wife of the teacher József Berecz.
