Second Generation

2. Károly NEMES was born on 21 January 1843 in Csernye, Veszprém m, HUN.5 He died on 23 December 1907 at the age of 64 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN. He was a miller.6,7 Károly bought and operated a mill in Ádánd. Through 1877 the mill was identified as the "Bikaréti malom" but by 1881 they were living in the "Új Malom" -- the new mill. After his two sons died of smallpox, they apparently relocated to Inota where he bought and operated another mill. The Inota operation was a rolling-mill which made the felt used for the "suba" (shepherd cloaks of the Hortabagy) and for hats. Károly or one of the Nemes relatives, was perhaps also a tavern owner in Várpalota, Veszprém m, HUN.8 Katalin RIGÓ and Károly NEMES were married on 2 February 1875 in Ádánd, Somogy m, HUN.9 The impending marriage was advertised on 17, 24, and 31 Jan 1875. The couple were married by the Reformed Minister ("lelkéz") Kálmán Somogyi. The witnesses were: Gábor Csüti and Boldozsar Falusö.

3. Katalin RIGÓ was born on 27 August 1855 in Tés, Veszprém m, HUN.10 She was baptized on 28 Aug. She died on 8 June 1928 at the age of 72 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN. Beginning in 1888, she spelled her maiden name "Riga" -- rather than "Rigó." Her brother Dániel made this spelling change a few years earlier, and apparently this spelling was already in use when her brother Sándor was born in 1871.

Children were:

i.

Dezső NEMES was born on 27 October 1875 in Ádánd, Somogy m, HUN.11 He died on 12 August 1883 at the age of 7 in Ádánd, Somogy m, HUN.12 Cause of death was smallpox.

ii.

Mártha NEMES was born on 29 July 1877 in Ádánd, Somogy m, HUN.13 She was born Márta, but used the English spelling -- Martha -- after emigrating to the U.S. She died in 1946 at the age of 69 in Norwalk, CT. She apparently immigrated to the U.S. in 1901, shortly after her husband's arrival. But, I have been unable to find the ship's manifest. On 13 October 1909, she arrived in New York aboard the SS Carpathia, which sailed from Fiume on 25 September. She is listed as a "non-immigrant alien" who resided in Passaic, NJ. It states she had lived in the US from 1901 until 1909. Therefore, it is likely she returned to Hungary for her sister Esther's wedding which took place on September 19. This manifest states that she is a married housewife, 5'4" tall with a dark complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes.

iii.

Jenő NEMES was born on 7 August 1881 in Ádánd, Somogy m, HUN.14 He died on 7 August 1883 at the age of 2 in Ádánd, Somogy m, HUN.15 Cause of death was smallpox.

v.

Ernö NEMES was born on 1 January 1886 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN.16 It was noted in both the birth and death records that the boy was not offered for baptism. This is probably the Ernö buried with his parents in Inota, with the name not being included in the records since he wasn't baptized. He died on 1 January 1886 at the age of 0 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN.17 The boy lived 12 hours; cause of death was listed as "frailty at birth." He was buried on January 2 by the reformed teacher.

vi.

Károly NEMES was born on 29 January 1887 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN.18 He was baptized on February 1. His god-parents were Dániel Riga (Karoly's uncle) and his wife Irén Zatureczki. This is the first place we've seen the mother's family name spelled "Riga" instead of "Rigó." He died in 1940 at the age of 53 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN.

vii.

Jenő NEMES19,20,21 was born on 18 August 1888 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN.22 He was baptized on August 21. He died on 29 September 1961 at the age of 73 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN. In 1912 he visited his sister Esther and brother-in-law Victor in New York. He arrived aboard the SS Saxonia from Fiume on 13 Sep 1912. He was listed as single, but Hungarian records indicate he was already married. He wanted to return to the U.S. later with his wife, but when WWI began he was not allowed to leave Hungary.

Before World War I, he was a miller at the Riga mill in Magyaralmás (north of Székesfehérvár). During World War I he was a soldier in the Székesfehérvár 17th Militia Regiment, and from 1915-19 was a prisoner-of-war in Italy.

He bought the Hegedus mill in Inota in 1929 , and bought out his brothers and took over the operation of the Nemes mill in Inota in 1935. He operated the Nemes mill in Inota until it (and all its contents ... including most Nemes family mementos) were taken by the Communist government in 1952. In his later years, he had an 18 year old girlfriend, by whom he fathered a daughter.
