Ancestors of Eszter Nemes
Vic's paternal grandmother, born Eszter Nemes, was from an entrepreneurial family of mill owners who had prospered in the second half of the 19th century. When she came to the United States in 1906, it was to "see the world" and visit her older sister Márta (Martha) who had emigrated with her husband a few years earlier. She returned home in 1909 and aboard ship she met Viktor Berecz. After a brief courtship, they married in Inota and immediately returned to the U.S. After moving to Norwalk, in the 1930's, she was an avid gardener. She was also remembered by many in South Norwalk's Hungarian-American community for her Strudel Shop, which unfortunately she had to close due to wartime shortages.
