First Generation


1. Eszter NEMES1,2 was born on 18 May 1884 in Inota, Fejér m, HUN.3 She was baptized on June 4. Her godparents were Imre Gaal and Eleonora Vida. The pastor was Zsigmond Sándor. Her father was identified at that time as the mill owner of the lower mill in Inota. The family professed the Reformed faith, though there were several Lutherans among their ancestry and near relations.. She died on 15 May 1952 at the age of 67 in Norwalk, CT.4 She died of a cerebral hemorrhage, and was buried at Riverside cemetery. She first immigrated to the US aboard the SS Statendam, out of Rotterdam, arriving in New York on 25 Apr 1905. She planned a long stay with her older sister Martha and brother-in-law Charles Szabados who then lived in Passaic, NJ. She considered herself a well-to-do girl seeing the world, and had no plans to stay in the U.S.

She returned to Hungary in 1909, soon married a man she had met on the return voyage to Hungary. Immediately after their marriage they returned to New York. She Americanized the spelling of her given name to Esther and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1933. Esther is still remembered today for the Strudel Shop she operated at 63 Railroad Avenue in South Norwalk from 1938 until 1944.
