Third Generation

4. Mihály DUTKA was born on 12 December 1848 in Lazonpatak (Podproc), Szepes m, HUN.5 He died on 18 November 1903 at the age of 54 in Lazonpatak (Podproc), Szepes m, HUN.6 He died at age 55, was identified as a property owner (birtokos) living at Lazonpatak 7, and was buried on November 19. With few exceptions, in the church records the family name was spelled Dutka. Likewise it was spelled that way on Nick's 1908 immigration manifest. Therefore, for consistency, that spelling is used for all people born in Europe. But, since the family has consistently spelled it Dutko in the US, that spelling has been adopted here for all the children born in the US.

The family lived in Lazonpatak, Szepes county, Hungary ... now known as Podproc, Slovakia. The German name for the town is Latzenbach. These three language variations on the town name were used interchangably in the 19th century. The Dutka's were of the Greek Catholic faith and attended the ancient (c1325) Saint Mikulas Greek Catholic Church in nearby Nagyolvsa (Olsavica or Olschau). Zsófia SZALÁNCZY and Mihály DUTKA were married on 14 November 1870 in Felsö-Repás, Szepes m, HUN.7 He was a 23-year-old bachelor living at Podproc house #7, and she was a 20-year-old maiden living at Pavlyán #3. The groom's name was spelled "Dutko" in the register. The marriage register also states in Latin: "promulgato et dispenciato 4 mixto 7 conguinato grado" -- which I believe means that a dispensation was issued because the were related in the 4th degree (canon law) and the 7th degree (civil law). That implies that their common ancestors were great-grandparents on one side, and great-great-grandparents on the other -- ie. they were second cousins once removed.

5. Zsófia SZALÁNCZY was born on 26 April 1851 in Pavlyán (Pavlány), Szepes m, HUN.8 She died after 1916 at the age of 65. She was still living at the time of her youngest daughter's marriage in Johnstown in 1916, when she was identified as a farmer. According the the baptismal entries for her children, she was of the Roman Catholic faith which was noted as "RCath" or "LR" for Latin Ritus (Latin Rite). This was confirmed when the records of her ancestors were found in the Roman Catholic church at Felsö-Repás (and it's "daughter-church" at Pavlyán, where the family lived.)

Her family name was spelled in several ways including Salanci in early records. For consistency, the most common Hungarian spelling -- Szalánczy -- found in the church registers is used here. In the early 19th century, close to half the population of the village of Pavlyán had the surname Szalánczy -- therefore it was difficult to work with the church records.
