Fourth Generation

12. Josiah J. WALKER3,4 was born on 4 October 1831 in Stony Creek Township, Somerset Co, PA. He was baptized 18 Mar 1832 at the Pine Hill Lutheran Church in Somerset County. He died on 9 July 1904 at the age of 72 in Shanksville, PA. He was a very successful businessman. He owned a 1500 acre farm one mile east of Shanksville, two sawmills, a gristmill, and a planing mill. He was known as the "sugar king" of Somerset County, having produced 20,000 pounds of maple sugar from a grove of 4000 trees in 1899.

According to the 1880 census, his son Francis by his first wife, and all his children (except the two born after 1880) by his second wife were living with him. Also living with him was his father, Jacob, his sister Lizzie Spangler, and a grandson Virgil Walker.

He was also known for his generosity and public spirit. Josiah was active in local affairs serving both as an auditor and school director in Shanksville. He aslo served as elder and deacon n the Shanksville Lutheran Church.

The genealogy prepared by Charles J. Walker, while generally very good, lacks reliability for the descendants of Josiah J. Walker due to errors in separating his children between his two wives. Therefore, the children and grandchildren of Josiah J. Walker are based on the Wilson/Walker Genealogy and the 1899 biography of Josiah Walker. Sarah J. LARMAN and Josiah J. WALKER were married on 21 January 1864 in Shanksville, PA.
