Fourth Generation

10. Stephen Julius "Julio" DUBOCQ was born on 6 July 1814 in Philadelphia, PA. He was baptized on August 27, 1814 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Philadelphia. He died on 28 September 1868 at the age of 54 in Ponce, PR. Family records give his death as 26 Dec 1869. His name in his baptismal record is in English ... "Stephen Julius Dubock." Later in Puerto Rico, he was always known as Julio. In 1834, he inherited portions of the plantations Los Meros and Pámpanos on the death of his father. In 1836, he purchased the remainder of Los Meros and purchased La Unión in association with Esteban Domenech. He sold his share in the latter in 1839. From 1845-49 he was a planter and wholesaler in partnership with G. Laporte. From 1849 he was a principal in Dubocq, Gamon & Company, a Ponce firm shipping sugar and other products to the U.S. According to one source, when the sugar market collapsed in 1852, he went to France. But, he soon returned because he visited his sister Aglaé in New Albany in 1864 or 1865, and was present in Puerto Rico in 1866 when one of his younger daughters was married. Juana Modesta ROUX and Stephen Julius "Julio" DUBOCQ were married about 1835 in Puerto Rico.

11. Juana Modesta ROUX was born on 15 June 1818 in Yabucoa, PR.26 She was baptized in September 1818 in the Guardian Angels Church (Santos Angelos Custodios) in Yabucoa. The record is virtually illegible. The month and year are certain, as is the child's name Juana Modesta (given in two places). Her father's name appears to be written as Loreto de la Roux, a native of France ... but that information is very conjectural. She died on 3 September 1893 at the age of 75 in Ponce, PR. This was the date of her burial in the Riera family plot. This name was also spelled Rousé, Rous and Rus.

Children were:

i.

Antonio J. DUBOCQ was born in October 1837 in Puerto Rico. This birthdate is based on the information he provided for a ship's manifest in 1861. He died on 6 January 1882 at the age of 44 in Brooklyn, NY. In 1850 he was a student in the Preparatory School of St. John's College (now Fordham University) in what was then the NYC railroad commuting town of West Farms ... now central Bronx. The program was typically four years in the prep school and then three years in the classical program of the college. The college also had a "commercial" program which led to a business school certificate rather than a degree. We do not know the program he pursued, but it was probably the latter.

By 1860, he was living in Brooklyn where he became a naturalized citizen on 15 November. He shortly thereafter visited his family in Puerto Rico, because, according to an entry on the 26 February 1861 manifest of the schooner Euphemia, from Ponce to New York, he was a 23 years and 5 months old merchant who was a US citizen.

According to the 1880 US census, his father was born in Pennsylvania, he and his mother were born in Puerto Rico. He was a 41 year old bookkeeper and was living with his family in Brooklyn, NY.

ii.

Manuel DUBOCQ was born about 1839 in Puerto Rico. He died on 8 April 1855 at the age of 16 in Ponce, PR.27 This is the only reference to this person. The only evidence of this person is his death record at the Ponce cathedral. Since that record implies an adult, he either was the first or second child of Julio, or possibly another relative who came from France.

iii.

Margarita Eufemia DUBOCQ.

iv.

Julia DUBOCQ was born on 28 August 1849 in Ponce, PR. She died on 23 July 1885 at the age of 35 in Puerto Rico.

v.

Josefa DUBOCQ was born on 9 August 1850 in Ponce, PR. We know little about Josepha other than her marriage to Pelayo Riera's brother, with whom she had at least one child. But, a Josepha Dubocq gave birth to an illegitimate child years later. Could this Josepha be the mother of that child after she was widowed?

vi.

Modesta Ruperta DUBOCQ was born on 27 March 1853 in Ponce, PR. She died on 28 June 1860 at the age of 7 in Ponce, PR. This child's gravestone still exists in Section 32 of the Ponce cemetery.

vii.

Rita DUBOCQ was born on 1 May 1856 in Ponce, PR. She was a twin.

viii.

Dolores DUBOCQ was born on 1 May 1856 in Ponce, PR. She was a twin. She died on 26 April 1893 at the age of 36 in Ponce, PR. This is her date of burial. She was reportedly never married. But, she is listed as godparents on several occasions with a Jose Ynigo.

ix.

Virginia "Minina" DUBOCQ was born on 10 September 1858 in Ponce, PR. She died on 23 December 1938 at the age of 80 in Barcelona, SPN.

x.

Julio Francisco DUBOCQ was born on 22 January 1863. He died in Ponce, PR. This man and his wife are only known from the birth of their grandchild in 1913.
