38. William "Bill" SIMMONS was born in December 1860 in NC. According to Heinegg, several free colored members of the Simmons family of Virginia were very early settlers in Bertie County, NC ... parts of which became Halifax and Northampton counties later in the 18th century. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to connect them to our Simmons ancestors of the mid-19th century. Matilda "Tildie" HAWKINS and William "Bill" SIMMONS were married in 1880. According to the 1900 US Census, she gave birth to eight children, of whom seven were living. She apparently gave birth to two additional children after 1900 who died young. 39. Matilda "Tildie" HAWKINS was born in December 1859 in NC. She died on 15 February 1926 at the age of 66 in Faucett Twsp, Halifax Cty, NC. Her 1926 Death Certificate names her parents as "Dick Simmons" and "Beck Hawkins" ... I suspect this resulted from a misunderstanding and that Dick Simmons was actually her husband's father. The parents identified here have a high-degree of certainty, based on the 1860 census. Children were: | i. | Cora HAWKINS was born in 1874 in Halifax County, NC. The 1880 US Census gives her age as 6 and notes: "Daughter of Matilda." Her death certificate, where the informant was Bill Simmons, has for birthdate "Don't Know" and for age "about 49." She died on 21 February 1926 at the age of 52 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She married a man named Jim Day. | | ii. | Ovid D. SIMMONS was born in January 1880 in Halifax County, NC. He died young. | 19 | iii. | Arvie SIMMONS. | | iv. | Alonzo "Lonzie" SIMMONS was born in June 1885 in NC. He died on 16 September 1951 at the age of 66 in Halifax County, NC. He took over his parent's farm, where his father lived with him until his death. Lonzie married a cousin of his mother named Minerva Hawkins (born 1904 in NC) and they had at least eight children. | | v. | Daisy SIMMONS was born in May 1887 in NC. She died on 10 May 1942 at the age of 55 in Weldon, NC. She was married to Horace Williams. | | vi. | Hattie SIMMONS was born in September 1890 in NC. She died on 21 February 1979 at the age of 88 in Williamston, NC. At the time of her death, she was the widow of a man named Britt, and was a resident of Littleton, Halifax Cty, NC. She was buried on February 25th in the Lebanon Church Cemetery. | | vii. | Connie SIMMONS was born in May 1893 in NC. He died on 4 October 1914 at the age of 21 in Faucett Twsp, Halifax Cty, NC. She was employed as a "logging wagoner" and was "accidentally killed by log rolling off log train." | | viii. | Ellis SIMMONS was born in July 1896 in NC. He died on 5 March 1956 at the age of 59 in Halifax County, NC. He married Jennie Wilkens (born c1900 in VA) and they had at least two children. |
