Seventh Generation

78. Jonathan HAWKINS was born in 1826 in North Carolina. According to Heinegg, free colored Hawkins families began settling in northeast North Carolina in the mid-1700s. They were too numerous to attempt to find ancestors of either Jonathan or Beck.

79. Rebecca "Beck" HAWKINS was born in 1835 in NC. In the 1860 census, her first name is listed as Ridley ... which doesn't make sense for a female. But, the good correlation of birthdates both for her and her daughter Matilda make it almost certain that we have the correct parents. In 1870 she was living with her 14 year-old daughter Matilda, a woman named Aggy Brickell, and two sons ... Jesse and Thomas. In 1880 she was living alone with three sons, William, Jesse, and Thomas. William and Thomas were identified as mulattos, Jesse as black.
