Fourth Generation

14. József SZONDI93 was born in 1787 in Polgárdi, Fejér m, HUN. While we have in his own hand (in the list of Fokszabadi teachers) that he was a native of Polgárdi, I was unable to find a record of his birth in the Polgárdi Reformed church registers. He died on 5 January 1854 at the age of 67 in Fokszabadi, Veszprém m, HUN.94 He died at age 67 of hemorrhoids. He was buried in Fokszabadi on January 8 by József Kálmán, the reformed minister of Hidvég. Kálmán had been pastor at Felsönyék while Szundi taught there, and had acted as his "násznagy" (witness) at the Szundi-Tolnai marriage in 1824. The family name was alternatively spelled Szondi and Szundi, the first becoming most common by 1850. Since this man himself spelled it "Szondi" (in the Fokszabadi teacher's list), I have used that spelling in this database.

He was a reformed schoolteacher. At the time of his marriage in 1824, he taught at Felsönyék, near Szabadhidvég in Somogy megye. From 1826 until 1834, he taught in Szárszó on the south shore of Lake Balaton. There he was identified as the deacon ("Levita") since he probably assumed some pastoral responsibility in addition to teaching in this small congregation that was without its own pastor. From 1834-36, he was headmaster ("rector") in Kiskeszi -- later called Sárkeszi -- just west of Székesfehérvár. Finally, he taught in Fokszabadi -- now called Balatonszabadi, near Siófok -- from 1836 until his death. Sára TOLNAI and József SZONDI were married on 23 November 1824 in Szekszárd, Tolna m, HUN.95 The groom was identified as the headmaster at Felsönyék (south of Szabadhidvég in Somogy m). Witnesses at the wedding were József Kálmán, the minister at Felsönyék, Ferenc Deli husband of the bride's cousin, Ersé Seres, and a mill-owner, and Ádám and Mihály Szemerlei Szabo, owners of a blacksmith shop in Szekszárd, who were cousins of the bride's father.

15. Sára TOLNAI was born on 17 September 1807 in Szekszárd, Tolna m, HUN.96 She died on 28 June 1880 at the age of 72 in Szabadhegy, Somogy m, HUN.97 Her death record says she died at age 78, after living as a widow for 25 years. Actually, she was 72 ... apparently she added a few years to her age probably due to the large disparity between her husband's age and her own. At the time of her death, she lived at Szabadhegy #13.
