Fourth Generation

8. János GODINA was born about 1767 in Lehomér (Lemerje), Vas m, HUN. He died on 14 July 1847 at the age of 80 in Lehomér (Lemerje), Vas m, HUN. It is not certain that this death record relates to our ancestor; but, his name, village, and age are all consistent. He was a "jobbágy" and "földmüves" (peasant and farm laborer) from Lemerje.

János GODINA was married about 1791.

János GODINA was born about 1793 in Lehomér (Lemerje), Vas m, HUN. He died between 1847 and 1857 at the age of 54 in Lehomér (Lemerje), Vas m, HUN. If the various assumptions made are correct, this János Godina died in the period indicated. But, I was unable to find such a record in the death register. A János Godina married Ilona Bencsecz (1847 #21) and is identified as the son of János Godina of Lehomér. I believe he is too young to be a brother of our ancestor István. Also too young (plus, there is a naming problem) is István Godina, who married Judit Andrecz (m 1857 #21) and was also identified as a son of the late János Godina of Lehomer. Both appear to be associated with the house Lehomér #9, as was our ancestor Iván. Therefore, it is probable that these are the sons of an older brother, János, of our ancestor István. Though I found no direct information about this brother, I felt it important to include him to permit inclusion of his two documented sons in the family history.

Iván GODINA was born in 1798 in Lehomér (Lemerje), Vas m, HUN. He died on 25 October 1880 at the age of 82 in Battyánd (Puconci), Vas m, HUN. His death record indicated that he was born in Lehomér, and died at age 82 while living at Puzsocz #19. I initially considered three children, whose birth records I found, as possible siblings of István. They were: Magdolna (b 1828 #125); Mátyás (b 1832 #2); and Judit (b 1835 #13). The mother of these was Katalin Köllsz. This was the Latin era of the records, and the father was identified as "Joannes Baptiste Godina" of Lehomér. But, in the death record of the youngest (1837 #73) -- Hungarian came into use in 1836 -- the father is identified as "Godina Iván". In Hungarian, it appears that the names János and Iván were considered different, though in Latin both are translated as "Joannes" -- in English, John. I suspect the name János relates to St. John the Apostle, and Iván to St. John the Baptist. Of course, these people being Protestants, the issue of saint's name is not as important as it is to Roman Catholics. Two older children are known only by their marriage records, Katalin (m 1842 #11) and Mihály (m 1848 #55).

I concluded that the father of this family (Iván = Joannes Baptiste) was an older brother of our ancestor István, for several reasons, but especially since the son Mihály, and his wife Judit Friskits, were witnesses at the 1869 marriage of our ancestor Iván.
