Third Generation
6. János POPOVICS was born on 21 May 1847 in Lazonpatak (Podproc), Szepes m, HUN.20 In the baptismal record, his father was identified as a "telkes gazda" -- a smallholder. He was a twin. He died on 19 November 1914 at the age of 67 in Lazonpatak (Podproc), Szepes m, HUN.21 He died at age 67, and was buried on November 21. This family name was spelled Popovics in all the church records, but was spelled Popovich by the family members who emigrated to the US, after their arrival here. The spelling Popovics is used for all people born in Europe, and Popovich for those born in the US. At the time of their marriage, they lived at Podproc house #2. The baptismal records of their younger children identified their home as house #1, but for the later children it went back to Podproc house #2. Katalin SZAKMÁR and János POPOVICS were married on 14 November 1870 in Nagyolsva (Olsavica), Szepes m, HUN.22 The groom and bride were respectively 24 and 20 years old. Both were identified as orphans. 7. Katalin SZAKMÁR was born in December 1850 in Alsórepás (Nizné Repase), Szepes m, HUN. No record of her baptism could be found. But, according to the 1869 census, at the end of that year she was employed as a servant and living in Podproc house #6 with György Dutka (b1814) and his wife and two sons (György b 1846 and Mihály b 1848). It states that she was born in 1853, and that her birthplace was Alsórepás. Her 1909 death record likewise says she was born in Alsórepás, but gives her age as 59 indicating a 1850 birth -- as does the age of 20 she herself gave at the time of her marriage in 1870. There was only one Szakmár family in Alsórepás, the brothers Pál and András who operated a mill. It is an unproven assumption that Katalin's parents were András and Mártha. When she married she identified herself as an orphan. So if this assumption is correct, she was likely born in December 1850. Mártha Mindyás Szakmár died that month, as a result of childbirth. András died in 1853. A possible problem with this assumption is that another child named Katalin was born of this marriage ... a twin in 1840, and no death record for her was found. But, in 1840 the priest apparently was not recording the deaths of infants -- none were found for the entire year, a virtual impossibility in that time and place. She died on 14 March 1909 at the age of 58 in Lazonpatak (Podproc), Szepes m, HUN.23 She was identified as Mrs. János Popovics, who died at age 59 while living at Lazonpatak #2, and who was born in Alsórepás.
