Transcript from Beled Civil Marriage Register

This transcription of a 1911 marriage record was done in 1941 by the local Beled notary. Since the family still lived in that town, it's hard to determine why this transcript was requested. It may have been somehow related to the start of World War II and the induction of this couple's only son into the Hungarian army. The information provided is very straightforward, but it's interesting to see how complete and uniform the data was for marriages that took place after the institution of civil registers in 1895.

Top-of-Page Material. It reads "Extract from the Marriage Register" of Sopron County.

Actual Transcription (Boxed).

  • Column 1 - entry number -- in this case #5.
  • Column 2 - place and date of marriage. It took place in Beled on the 8th of June in 1911. Note that both the year date and the day-of-the-month are written out.
  • Block 3 - information about the groom (völegény). Click to See Note.
  • Block 4 - the same information about the bride (menyasszony). Note that her calling is given as "tanitónö" meaning female teacher.
  • Column 5 - the witnesses names and places of residence. Click to See Note.
  • Column 6 - the official recording the marriage and information about the signatures in the original register. Note that the official is identified as the "anyakönyvvezetö" or "registrar." It is indicated that the original was signed by the two witnesses, the bride and groom, and the registrar.
Bottom-of-Page Material. The local Beled notary signed and dated the transcript, and (I'm guessing here) provided a reference to the original register. A 1 Pengó tax stamp is cancelled by pen to preclude its reuse.
