Eighth Generation176. András OSZTRÓVSZKY was born about 1725. Family tradition says our Osztróvszky ancestors were Russians who emigrated to Hungary in the 18th century, but this has proven incorrect. The director of the Fekete Ház Museum in Szeged told me, in 1999, that he believed the family originated in the village of Osztróv, now Ostrov, Slovakia. I believe that idea is based entirely on their name which means literally "from the town of Osztróv." But, the death record of Imre Osztróvszky clearly identifies his birthplace as Vittencz. The website containing the history of Vittencz (Witenz in German; Chtelnica in Slovak) says that the name Osztróvszky is found in the town records from the 16th century, and that a Martinus Osztróvszky was listed as a taxpayer in 1715. Keep in mind that Vittencz is less than 10 miles west of Osztróv, and so the historical origins of the family may very well have been there. Minor variations of the spelling of this name are found in the records. The Osztróvszky family were Roman Catholics. There were several Osztróvszky families of child-bearing age in Vittenz in the 1770s and 1780s. Two of them had sons named József born within a year of each other. But, It is almost certain that our József was the one born in 1785, since we know he had a brother Imre, who became a priest. There was only one Imre in the town. We don't know how or if the various Osztróvszky families were related. But, it seems that the three "brothers" who are found in Szeged records ... Márton, József, and Ferencz ... weren't all brothers. Márton was likely a cousin of the other two. That is the reason that only the two families of János and József ... who likely were brothers are listed here. Anna [OSZTRÓVSZKY] and András OSZTRÓVSZKY were married on 3 July 1746 in Vittencz, Nyitra m, HUN. 177. Anna [OSZTRÓVSZKY] was born (date unknown). Children were:
