4. Vicente Damia Jaume PUJALS was born on 15 February 1768 in Tossa, Gerona, Spain.3 He died on 26 April 1855 at the age of 87 in Santiago de Cuba, Oriente, Cuba. Prior to the revolutionary period, he was the royal tax collector for Santa Marta. In the early 1820s he was still listed as a businessman in Santa Marta. The final capture of Santa Marta by the "patriot" forces of the now-independent Republic of New Granada was in 1823. Shortly thereafter the Pujals and Moré families (as well as other committed "royalists") went into exile in Cuba. In addition to his legitimate children, Vicente probably also fathered at least one child by a slave in New Granada: Maria Lucia Josefa born to a slave named Mercid on 28 Aug 1814. Maria Josefa Gertrudis DE LA BASTIDA and Vicente Damia Jaume PUJALS were married on 7 March 1803 in Santa Marta, Magdelena, COL.4 The witnesses at this marriage were the groom's cousin Don Vicente Moré, his wife and sister of the bride Doña Maria Magdalena de la Bastida, and the bride's mother Doña Maria Lucia de Guzman. 5. He died in 1877 at the age of 74 in Madrid, SPN.1 He was a noted writer and mathematician. In his 1844 book Filosofia de la Numeracion he explored the practical and philosophical advantages of the base-12 number system. While most of the book is devoted to pointing out the advantages of this base (simpler fractions, simpler divisibility rules, easier computation), it appears that Pujals would have favored base 12 regardless, since he considered this base God’s choice. Are there not 12 lost tribes of Israel, 12 major prophets, 12 apostles, 12 major and minor scales of music to accompany the hymns to God! Pujals thought that for common use we should replace base 10 by base 12 as a prelude to a happier age living in consonance with God’s plan. | | ii. | Gertrudis PUJALS was born about 1805 in Santa Marta, Magdelena, COL. | | iii. | Clara PUJALS was born about 1806 in Santa Marta, Magdelena, COL.
