Ninth Generation
281. Sarah ASH was born about 1740 in Virginia. She died after 1810 at the age of 70 in Halifax County, NC. She is identified by Heinegg as one of seven free colored persons named Ash, who were probably siblings, born in the mid-1700s in south-side Virginia. They are probably descended from a white servant woman and a black man, if we accept Heinegg's theory. They are believed to be the ancestors of all the free-colored Ash(e) families of Halifax and Northampton counties of North Carolina. She herself moved to Halifax county before 1800, where she died after 1810. We know several of her children born in the 1760s also went to North Carolina. In the 1810 census we find a white Halifax County household (large farm) headed by Elizabeth Ashe that held 69 slaves. So this may provide an alternative theory of the origin of free colored Ash(e) families, particularly after the end of the Civil War. Children were: | i. | Sandy ASH was born about 1758 in Virginia. He died in Virginia. He lived in Norfolk County, VA. | | ii. | James ASH was born about 1760 in Virginia. He died in North Carolina. During the War of 1812, he served in the First Company of the North Carolina Regiment with his son Elvin. In the 1830 Census there was a mulatto James Ash household of four with one male under 10 years of age. It is possible that this was a son named James, who could be the father of our John. | | iii. | Rachel ASH was born about 1762 in Virginia. She died in Virginia.
