Seventh Generation

118. Wilkins HARRIS was born in 1803 in Warren County, NC. Based on Heinegg's analysis of free persons of color named Harris, he is likely a descendant of John Harris (born c1755) who settled in Warren County, who is in turn descended from another John Harris (born c1635) who was freed in accordance with the 1660 will of Thomas Whitehead of York County, VA.

We believe Wilkins and his wife were both born in Warren County, but apparently settled in Halifax County following their 1824 marriage. The 1830 US Census shows them as "Free Colored Persons" living with their two young children. According to the 1850 US Census, Wilkins Harris was a "mulatto" and "free inhabitant" of Halifax County living with his wife and eight children on property valued at $20. The family name is sometimes written incorrectly as "Harrison." He probably died before 1860. Barsheba DANIEL and Wilkins HARRIS were married on 7 February 1824 in Halifax County, NC.

119. Barsheba DANIEL was born in 1810 in Warren County, NC. In 1860, she was apparently a widow with a personal estate of $30 living with two teenaged daughters and a 10 year-old son. The three women were employed as "spinners".

She married Daniel Clanton in December 1873. According to the 1900 US Census, she gave birth to 13 children of whom seven were still living. In 1910, five were living.
