Seventh Generation

96. István RIGÓ was born about 1675. He died on 12 February 1740 at the age of 65 in Csurgó, Fejér m, HUN.188 The Rigó family were, in the mid-1700s, small farmers in Csurgó, Fejér vm, which is now known as Fehérvárcsurgó. They were of the Reformed faith. For the two decades from 1736-1755, the only Rigó family of child-bearing age was that of Péter. That he was the son of the István Rigó who died in 1740 is a total "leap of faith" -- but it is a distinct possibility. From later data, it is evident that there were other Rigó's living in that town during the period. But, it is extremely difficult to sort things out in the early period, since many of the marriages and deaths were apparently not recorded, and baptisms were (from 1741-1780) recorded only with the father's name.

Our ancestor János and his brother Mihály were the first to become mill-owners, in the mid-1800s. After that, the family moved about considerably, investing in many mills. In the 1870s and 1880s, the spelling of the family name was changed from Rigó to Riga.
