Third Generation

4. József HESZLER/HESZLÉNYI20,21 was born on 10 July 1814 in Szeged, Csongrád m, HUN.22 He died on 5 March 1895 at the age of 80 in Szeged, Csongrád m, HUN.23 At the time of his death, he lived at Boldogasszony Sugarut (Boulevard of the Assumption) #34. Cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage (agyszélhüdés). He was buried on March 7.

He was educated at Szeged's Piarist Academy between 1825 and 1833. In 1838 he qualified for a diploma from Buda University of the Arts. He returned to Szeged and took over the family's construction business.

József Heszlényi was one of Szeged's premier builder in the mid-19th century. In addition, he was a founder of the Szeged-Csongrád Savings Bank, and a member of the city council during the revolutionary period of 1848-49.

He was born József Heszler, but after 1862, he was known as József Heszlényi. The name change was noted in his baptismal record at a later date, as well as in the records of his children living at that date. The note reads: "M. kir. helytartótanács 1863 IX. 9. én kelt 59549 im eng. alapján családi neve 'Heszlényi' Püsp. hal. rend. erk. 3439/940." Basically, by a decree of the Royal Hungarian Vice-Regal Council of 09 Oct 1863, the family name was changed from Heszler to Heszlényi. The name change is also noted in a compilation of family name changes where he is identified as a master builder of Szeged, but here the permit number is given as #13385-62 from the Governor-General's office. Probably the change took some time to be finalized.

His construction activity listed here is a composite of the information found in the identified sources. After the war of 1848-9, he formed a partnership with Károly Hoffer, and the firm of "Hoffer and Heszlényi" was a leading major-project construction firm in Szeged for some years. They built the Szeged railway station and freight yards. On Kelemen Street, beside the "Fekete Haz" (the site of the old downtown Szeged casino in which both our Heszlényi and Osztróvszky ancestors were so prominent) they built a summer theatre (arena) which opened on 30 May 1856. In 1858 they built an indoor winter theatre, where from October until Easter the Szeged theatre company performed. In the western suburb of Rókus, they built both the hospital and railway station. They constructed the new buildings for the Piarist Academy as well as the Chapter House for the Brothers, and moved the Chapel of St. Rose to the new site. They also built the new downtown casino and numerous townhouses.

He is fondly remembered because during the severe flooding of the Tisza river in 1879, he took over thirty refugees into his house. Also to his credit, many of his buildings survived the flood, and remain standing today. He was succeeded in the construction business by his son József. Terézia GÖMÖRY and József HESZLER/HESZLÉNYI were married on 4 February 1841 in Szeged, Csongrád m, HUN.24 The wedding was performed by Fr. Antal Kreminger. Witnesses to the wedding were Antal Pitner (the bride's uncle) and Jozsef Heszler (Szeged city auditor and the groom's uncle).

5. Terézia GÖMÖRY was born in 1819 in Kecskemét, PPSK m, HUN. Her parents may be Imre Gömöri and Terezia Pitner, but that now seems a stretch. She died on 30 August 1862 at the age of 43 in Szeged, Csongrád m, HUN.25
