Second Generation
2. Iván GODINA was born on 30 March 1837 in Lehomér (Lemerje), Vas m, HUN. He was baptized on April 2. His family was from house #9 in Lemerje. He died on 24 June 1900 at the age of 63 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. His grandchildren were told that he was shot in a hunting accident, struggled home, only to die in front of his own house -- leaving his family in poverty. But, the civil death record filed in Puconci says the cause of death was "hektika" -- tuberculosis. Judit PODLESZEK and Iván GODINA were married on 7 February 1869 in Battyánd (Puconci), Vas m, HUN. The witnesses at the wedding were Iván's cousin Mihály Godina and his wife Judit Friskits. Following the marriage, the groom moved to the home of his wife's family -- Rönafó (Predanovci) #22 -- where the couple lived throughout their marriage. In addition to working as a farm laborer, he repaired watches according to his daughter ... my grandmother. 3. Judit PODLESZEK was born on 22 February 1855 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. She was born in house #22 and was baptized on 25 Feb. Her godparents were András and Katja Nescrati. She died on 18 September 1923 at the age of 68 in Predanovci, SLV. In her later years, she lived with her second daughter -- Francziska -- therefore, at the time of her death she lived in Predanovci house #29. Children were: | i. | Anna GODINA was born on 15 May 1873 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. She was baptized on May 18. She married Ferenc Bánfi in 1895. He was a landowner (földesúr) in Palmafa and her second cousin. | | ii. | István GODINA was born on 18 November 1875 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. He was baptized on November 20. He died in USA. He immigrated to the U.S. aboard the SS Majestic, leaving Southampton on 13 Apr and arriving in New York on 21 Apr 1910. The ship's manifest listed him as a 36 year old, single farmhand. He gave his next of kin at home as his sister Franciska of Rónafö, and stated he was coming here to his brother Ivan, who then lived in Newark, NJ. According to his sister, Mary, he became estranged from his brother and sisters during the World War I period as a result of unpaid loans. He supposedly remained in the US, but the family never heard from him again. In 2018, we found a 1930 and 1940 census record that is certainly him, as well as a 1922 Pennsylvania marriage license, and a 1937 US naturalization record. By 1930 he was living in Chicago and working as a dishwasher. At least until that time he used the spelling "Gojdina". He became a naturalized US citizen on 11 Mar 1937, at which time his name was legally changed to Steven, and he had reverted to the Slavic spelling of his surname, "Godina". In 1940, he was still living in Chicago, was 65 years old and not working. | | iii. | Francsiska GODINA was born on 11 February 1878 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. At the time of her marriage, her birthday was incorrectly given as February 20. She was baptized on Feb 17. | | iv. | Miklós GODINA was born on 29 October 1880 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. He was baptized on Nov 1. He died on 13 October 1884 at the age of 3 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. | | v. | Iván GODINA was born on 14 June 1883 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. He was baptized on Jun 17. He emigrated to the US before 1907, and initially lived in So. Bethlehem, PA. By 1910, he was living in Newark, NJ. He was a tailor who married in the US. There was one son and probably a second child of this marriage born in the US. They returned "home" about 1921, my mother remembered, as a child, seeing them off on a ship from New York. | | vi. | Katalin GODINA was born on 26 May 1886 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. She was baptized on May 29. She died about 1908 at the age of 22 in USA. Katalin came to US on 25 Apr 1907 at age 20 aboard the SS Statendam from Rotterdam. She lived, initially at least, with her brother Ivan in So. Bethlehem, PA. She married, and later died in childbirth. The baby was cared for by Mary Godina (who was living with her sister at the time), but the baby died several weeks later. Her unknown husband was not heard from again, but may have stayed in the US. | 1 | vii. | Mária GODINA. | | viii. | Zsuzsanna GODINA was born on 18 June 1893 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. She was born at Predanovci 22. She was baptized on 19 June; Iván Szesko and Kata Agostin were her godparents. She died in May 1983 at the age of 89 in Bronx, NY. She is buried in Hartsdale NY. She came to America on 20 Mar 1909 giving her age as 17 aboard the SS Louisiane from LeHarve, gave her next-of-kin as her mother, and was going to her sister Maria in New Brunswick. She apparently returned to Europe, and came back to America in 1912, giving her next-of-kin as brother-in-law Ferencz Banfi, and was going to her step-brother in So. Bethlehem. In America, she always used the name Sue. | | ix. | Teréz GODINA was born on 14 October 1895 in Rónafö (Predanovci), Vas m, HUN. Unlike the birth records of her siblings, at her birth, her mother was described as: "földmúvesnak a gazdaságban segitö és családtagju" -- help to the farmer on the land and to family members. Perhaps, the value of women was beginning to be recognized in Hungary. She died on 10 April 1981 at the age of 85 in Tehama, CA. She lived in Corning, CA at the time of her death. She came to America before her older sister Sue. Since she was under age, she came in as the daughter of another passenger, probably using a false name. Therefore, we've been unable to locate her arrival in the Ellis Island records. In America, she always used the name Tessie. |
