Fourth Generation


8. James CROXALL was born on 10 April 1796 in Baltimore, MD.2 He was baptized at St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church in Baltimore on April 22. His Maryland birth is confirmed by his own 1850 census record, showing that his son's 1880 census record stating that his father's birthplace was Virginia is in error. He died on 2 May 1862 at the age of 66 in New Albany, IN.2 He is buried in Fairview Cemetery in New Albany. He served as a private in the 5th Maryland Militia during the War of 1812, being involved in the Battle of North Point and also the defense of Fort McHenry.

He worked as a bookkeeper. According to a notice in the Louisville Public Advertiser (newspaper), his partnership with Thomas MacGill was dissolved on March 1, 1820. Marie-Felicite "Aglaé" DUBOCQ and James CROXALL were married on 28 April 1819 in Louisville, KY.3

9. Marie-Felicite "Aglaé" DUBOCQ was born on 14 December 1801 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.4 She died on 10 March 1879 at the age of 77 in New Albany, IN.2 She was very involved in the Temperence Movement in New Albany. In 1878, she applied for a War of 1812 widow's pension.

Aglaé Kent Bixby, who donated Peale's painting "Madame Dubocq and her Four Children" to the Speed Museum in Louisville in 1932 is her granddaughter.

i.

William CROXALL was born on 19 March 1820 in Louisville, KY.2 He died on 17 October 1825 at the age of 5.

ii.

James CROXALL was born on 1 October 1821 in Louisville, KY. He died on 1 October 1821 at the age of 0 in Louisville, KY.

iii.

Julius D. CROXALL was born on 18 September 1822 in Louisville, KY.2 Family records show his birthplace as "Brunstown" Kentucky ... possibly this was a village later incorporated into Louisville. He died on 17 April 1892 at the age of 69 in California. He apparently never married. In 1850 he worked at a market in Sacramento, CA. In 1860 he was a bookkeeper in Sacramento. Through the 1880s, until at least 1890, he was the San Francisco agent of the Sacramento wholesale grocer Lindley & Company.

iv.

Delphine CROXALL was born on 3 January 1826 in Alabama.2 She gave Alabama as her birthplace in several US censuses. Family records give her birthplace as Waterloo, AL. That is a village in extreme north-west Alabama, on the Tennessee River, which was not settled until 1832. It is more likely that she was born in Marengo County, site of the Olive and Vine Colony in which her family was invested. She died on 10 June 1906 at the age of 80.

Richard CROXALL was born on 23 July 1828 in New Albany, IN.2 He died on 1 May 1830 at the age of 1.

vi.

Edward Palmer CROXALL was born on 29 January 1831 in New Albany, IN.2 He died on 20 April 1891 at the age of 60. He appeared as a witness for his mother's War of 1812 widow's pension claim in 1878. According to the 1880 census, he was a 49-year-old bookkeeper. According to the 1888 New Albany city directory, he was Treasurer of the New Albany Woolen Mills.

Mary Eleanor CROXALL was born on 28 August 1833 in New Albany, IN.2 She died on 19 August 1834 at the age of 0 in New Albany, IN.

viii.

John Latour CROXALL was born on 4 July 1835 in New Albany, IN.2 He died on 6 April 1842 at the age of 6 in New Albany, IN.

ix.

Anthony Chardon CROXALL was born on 11 December 1837 in New Albany, IN.2 He died on 26 January 1839 at the age of 1 in New Albany, IN.

Charles Wilmer CROXALL was born on 7 September 1844 in New Albany, IN.2 He died on 10 January 1912 at the age of 67. According to the 1870 census, he lived in New Albany with his widowed mother, and was employed by the pottery works. After he married, he worked for the Fire Department.
