96. [Progenitor] MÁTIS was born (date unknown). Mátis is an ancient Hungarian family name. It was previously spelled Máté and Mátés.
The Mátis family is thought to have originated in Transylvania, in Mátisfalva (now Matiseni, Rumania) -- the "village of the Mátis". But, they were early settlers in Sopron county, and a Benedek Mátis was in 1648 already a leading citizen of Beled. The Mátis lines represented by the next generation are believed to be closely related, since they frequently served as baptismal sponsors (and in other roles) for each other. But, the precise relationship between Mihály, István, György, Ádam, and János Mátis (all born in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century) is presently unknown. Children were: | i. | Mihály MÁTIS was born between 1728 and 1732 in Beled, Sopron m, HUN. He died on 1 June 1787 at the age of 59 in Beled, Sopron m, HUN.305,306 His death is noted in both the Beled Catholic church register (where he was buried, and his age was given as 55) and the Vadosfa Lutheran church register (where he was a member, and his age was given as 59). | | ii. | István MÁTIS307 was born about 1732 in Beled, Sopron m, HUN. He died before 1794 at the age of 62. This Mátis line was documented by Rev. István Mátis (IV) in his 1981 monograph cited, and by his son István Mátis (V) with whom I corresponded. | 48 | iii. | Ádam MÁTIS. | | iv. | János MÁTIS was born in 1745.
