1810 Roman Catholic Baptismal Register of Children of Mixed Marriages

This register is from the Roman Catholic Church in the town of Súr in Veszprém county. It is an extremely unusual register in that there is a separate section for the children of mixed marriages. Separate sections in Hungarian church registers are very uncommon -- unlike Germany where separate sections for the baptism of illegitimate children is the rule, rather than the exception. I am uncertain why the separate section was established in this case; but, it may be due to a larger than normal number of mixed marriages in the area since neighboring Csernye was largely populated by Slovak Lutherans.

Content of Register.

Column.
  • Day of Month. Note that there are Month headers (December 1810 is the first) and also Year Headers (Note that June 1812 follows December 1810, so there aren't very many mixed marriage baptisms.)
  • Infant's Name.
  • Names of Parents of Child.
  • Religion of Parents. By definition, in this register the religion of the two parents will be different. Most are Lutheran/Catholic marriages.
  • Status and Hometown of Parents. Most are "Pleb" -- plebians, common people or peasants. Many of these mixed marriages are from the nearby town of Csernye which is predominently Lutheran with a significant Roman Catholic minority -- but no Catholic church.
  • Name of Godparents.
  • Name of Priest performing Baptism.
