Sixth Generation

50. Charles HOCKADAY was born in 1825 in NC. He died before 1880 at the age of 55. This family name was almost certainly adopted from the surname of their Hockaday slave-masters. [It was mistakenly spelled Hockady in the 1880 US Census.] There were three Huckaday farms in the western district of Halifax county in the 1840-60 period. They were owned John, Warwick, and William Huckaday who were likely brothers or cousins. Two of their slaves Caswell (born c1818) and Charles (born 1825) continued to work as a "Farm Hand" on the William Hockaday (1797-1881) farm after emancipation. This farm had 11 slaves according to the 1840 US Census Slave Schedule, including 4 male slaves whose ages were appropriate for Caswell and Charles. Since Charles and Susan named one of their sons Caswell, it is likely that Charles was the brother of Caswell.

51. Susan HOCKADAY was born in 1838 in NC.
