512. Hans "the Elder" LILJE was born about 1540 in Steinhorst, Hannover, GER. He died before 1599 at the age of 59 in Steinhorst, Hannover, GER. The first recorded Lilje ancestor is believed to be Fricke Lylye, who in 1414 was an administrator in Celle, Germany. A Johann Lillige, who is recorded as a farmer in Steinhorst in 1450, is thought to be the great-grandson of Fricke and the great-grandfather of this man, Hans the Elder.

Hans was a "Vollhöfner" (owner of a large farm) in Steinhorst, a village about 30km ENE of Celle. He is believed to be the second of three children, who married after 1564 and had three children, and died before 1599.

Hans was known as "Der Eltere" and is listed as "Generation 3" in Walter Lillie's genealogy. His surname was spelled "Lielie" but for subsequent generations in the Steinhorst and Lüsche records the name was spelled Lillien, Lilie or Lillie. The current spelling, Lilje, was first used in the records of Hankelsbüttel at the time of Johann's 1692 baptism. Unknown wife of Hans LILJE and Hans "the Elder" LILJE were married after 1564.

Children were:

	i.	Hans "the Younger" LILJE was born about 1570 in Steinhorst, Hannover, GER. He died about 1610 at the age of 40 in Lüsche bei Steinhorst, Hannover, GER. He died young, but likely after the birth of son Hans; his younger brother married his widow. He was known as "Der Jüngere" and was a Vollhöfner in Lüsche. In the records, his surname was spelled Lillien.
	ii.	Andreas LILJE was born before 1578 in Steinhorst, Hannover, GER. He was a Vollhöfner in Räderloh.
