Report on the 1989 Reunion by Al Davis.
November 11, 1989
Homecoming at Valpo last month was a memorable occasion for the thirteen of us “old-timers” who attended. A few brought their wives, which made this reunion even more special. Ted Mesh brought his young sons as well as his wife. Some of us had changed outwardly but all remained inwardly the same, which we could clearly feel.
How gratifying to find our brotherhood remained strong through all these years since we last met together. From Friday evening’s social hour and dinner in a private room at the Whitehouse Restaurant to communion in the chapel Sunday morning, we enjoyed a wonderful reunion. We laughed, joked, recollected stories, strolled across the old campus and renewed our ties with each other, the fraternity, and Valpo. Let’s plan to do it again in a few years-possibly in 1992 when the 1958-1962 group of us will celebrate a 30 year anniversary-or in 1995 at the 40th anniversary of the founding of Omicron Delta. Any volunteers to plan the next one?
For those who attended the reunion but didn’t pay the active $15 for their events, I would encourage you to do so now (801 Union St., Valpo). They came up rather short in meeting their expenses. Some of us paid lesser amounts because we didn’t attend all events-but let’s kick in the balance of the full amount if you paid nothing and help the actives out. In spite of our obvious years difference, we were well received by the young men at the house. It was a little awesome for most of us to realize we are Sigma Tau Gamma’s charter members on campus.
For those of you who wrote and ordered a copy of the biographical records of ourselves but sent no money, I’m sending you a copy as ordered. But I hope you will still send $10.00. Expenses for mailings, secretarial work, copying charges, and the social hour have left only enough to pay for this mailing. Any further surplus could be used by the fraternity or to complete their collection of composite pictures since one or two are missing and would need to be copied from someone’s own copy.
It was great to hear from so many of you - 39 answered my letters. Sadly, Ralph Long and Don Neeb are deceased, as well as Earl Meyer, Ernie Jabs, and Dave Haberbosch. We called their names and observed a moment of silence for them at Friday night’s dinner. Addresses for Dean Garwood, Bob Jabs, E. Jannasch, and Arnold Knude remain unavailable.
Hope to see you all again before too many more years.
